Bikini Confident Life Hacks for Curvy Girls! Summer Confidence Tips!
Being Plus-Size and Wearing a Bathing Suit Does Not Make Me Brave
Last summer the #Fatkini movement swept Instagram with countless women using the body acceptance hashtag to redefine what a beautiful "bikini body" means. These gals have been celebrated for being "brave" enough to show off their gorgeous curvy figures in their beachwear, but perhaps courage never should have been brought into the dialogue.
Skorch magazine founder, and body positivity activist, Jessica Kane shared a stirring message in her latest Instagram post asserting that she doesn't want to be thought of as "brave," simply for rocking a one-piece in public.
THIS WAS NOT BRAVE. I've been told how brave I am for not having a coverup, but going without a wrap would only take bravery if I cared what others thought of me, but I don't. I spend my time worrying about things I CAN control and this day, I was only thinking about how fab I felt and how much sun I was catching. Things that DO take bravery? A family battling tragic illness, a mother trying to beat addiction, a person trying to break free of domestic violence, reaching out for help when you have already planned your suicide and feel like you can't breath one more day. THAT is brave. Not wearing a swimsuit at the beach. LIVE life and only worry about what really matters.
She goes on to say in her blog, "Eff the critics babygirl, and eff anyone else's version of beauty if it forces you to deny embracing moments like these..live your life NOW."
She certainly has a point. Having the strength to wear a bathing suit on a hot summer day shouldn'thaveto be something we celebrate women for. In an ideal world, it would just be a given. But the reality is, it does take some nerve for a lot of women—regardless of size—to strut their stunning stuff in lycra. Whether you come at it from Kane's angle, or whether you're uploading your #Fatkini selfie, at least a sense of universal body confidence is something women are working towards, in their own ways. The words are just semantics.
